My apprentice used a zip tie to hold a shoe on a spooky horse

We were out at the Miller farm and this big draft horse kept pulling his shoe off before we could finish. My kid grabbed a heavy duty zip tie from the truck, looped it around the hoof wall and the shoe's clip, and it held long enough to get the nails in. Anyone else have a weird tool save the day like that?

Honestly, that zip tie trick makes me nervous. A sudden break could really spook the horse or cause a bad step. I've seen too many quick fixes lead to bigger problems later on.

Back in my farrier school days they drilled into us that only proper clinching and nails made a safe shoe. Saw a guy at a county fair last year use a hose clamp on a pony's loose shoe to get through the last show class. Changed my whole view on temporary fixes, sometimes you just need the job done with what's in the truck bed. Your apprentice has good quick thinking under pressure.
