Unpopular opinion: I think the 10-year apprentice rule is a bad idea

I just finished my 4th year and my boss told me I'm ready to test for my journeyman license. I was shocked because everyone says you need a full decade of experience first. I've run my own small jobs for the last 18 months without any callbacks. Why hold people back if they can prove they know the code and do clean work? Has anyone else tested early and felt prepared?

That decade rule exists for a reason. The real test is handling the weird problems that only show up after years in the field.
