A 30-year journeyman told me why my conduit bends were off

I was wrestling with a 90 degree bend on 3/4 EMT yesterday at a remodel in Oak Park, and this old timer walked over and said my bender shoe was dirty. He showed me the crusted tape residue right where the conduit sits, and after I cleaned it with acetone, my first bend came out dead perfect. Has anyone else found a weird simple fix like that from an unexpected source?

Tape residue on mine too - cleaned with alcohol and it fixed everything.

Acetone's a bit harsh for tape residue... try mineral spirits next time.
