Update: My $8 toilet flapper fix saved me $150 on water this month
Last month I noticed my water bill jumped from $40 to almost $190 and I had no idea why. I checked all my faucets and hoses but nothing was dripping. Then my neighbor told me to check the toilet tank for a silent leak. I put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and sure enough within 20 minutes the bowl had blue water. So I ran to the hardware store and grabbed a Fluidmaster flapper for $8. Took me about 10 minutes to swap it out with just a screwdriver. Now my bill is back down to normal and I can't believe how much water was just going straight down the drain. Has anyone else had a sneaky toilet leak that cost them way more than they'd expect?

Honestly I was one of those people who thought "it's just a toilet, how much water could it waste?" Then I had the same thing happen, @jenny_carr52 is totally right about that food coloring trick saving you from finding out the hard way. Changed my whole view on those little rubber parts.

Actually it's more like a quarter cup of food coloring, but yeah the blue water trick is good. Just figured I'd mention that cause some packets are tiny.
