Heated debate with my neighbor about storing paint cans in the garage during winter

He says it's fine as long as they don't freeze solid, but I've heard the temperature swings ruin the chemical makeup over a few months. Anyone got a solid reason to pick one side over the other based on experience?

doubt it matters that much unless you live in an igloo.
