Spent $600 on a fancy sonar unit, turns out my old transducer was fine
I run a small crew on the Mississippi backwaters near Dubuque, and last month I convinced myself the reason we kept hitting buried stumps was bad equipment. So I dropped $600 on a top of the line side scan unit, spent a whole weekend mounting it and running cables. First day out, it showed the same muddy mess as my old unit, and I was SO mad. Turned out the real issue was I had the old transducer mounted too deep, right in the prop wash, so it was reading a bunch of ghost signals. A buddy on the ramp told me to just move it up 4 inches and angle it down. Now my old $200 unit works fine and the new one is sitting in a crate. Anyone else thrown money at a setup before checking the simple install stuff first? What did you waste on?
