The guy at the ReStore in Boise handed me a $4 hinge and saved my kitchen cabinet doors
I was about to buy a $28 soft-close set at the big box store last Tuesday, and he pulled me aside and showed me how to shim the old hinge with a piece of a soda can, so now I'm wondering if anyone else has gotten a weirdly specific tip from a volunteer that actually worked.

How did he know your hinge could be saved in the first place? I ask because that is the part that always gets me with these old-timer tips. Anyone can hand you a trick, but the real skill is looking at your specific broken thing and knowing it does not need to be replaced yet. Most store workers just want to sell you the $28 set and move on to the next person. Did he actually walk you through why the shim works, or did he just hand you a snip of aluminum and wish you luck? I want to know if he explained the whole idea so you could do it again on the next cabinet that starts sagging.
