Just realized my monitor arm was fighting my desk frame this whole time
I built my desk out of a solid core door from Home Depot about 8 months ago, and I kept having this annoying wobble on my left monitor. I blamed the cheap gas spring arm I got for $35, but last weekend I actually looked under the desk and saw the clamp was sitting right on the edge of a hollow section in the frame, not on the solid wood. The arm was torqueing against the unsupported lip and that's why my screen shook every time I typed. I moved the clamp 4 inches to the left, over a solid chunk, and the wobble is completely gone. So if your monitor arm feels flimsy, check the mounting surface before you buy a $120 upgrade. Anyone else dealt with a hidden hollow spot in their desk top or frame that made their setup feel worse than it was?

How many of us have blamed the cheap part when the real problem was our own janky setup hiding in plain sight? I did the same thing with a standing desk frame that turned out to be clamped to a drawer slide, so my whole monitor did the wave every time I sneezed. Took me three weeks and a bruised knuckle to figure out that one. Moving it four inches is basically the DIY version of fixing a car by kicking the tire.
