The washing machine drain hose valve grip that fixed my espresso tamper
Bought a cheap tamper at a garage sale in Spokane for $3 because the handle was loose and wobbled worse than a bent distributor rotor. I tried epoxy, tape, even shoved a toothpick in there. Nothing held. Then I remembered my washing machine had a cracked drain hose last spring and I had a spare 3/4 inch hose clamp sitting in the drawer. Clamped it around the base of the handle and the shaft, cranked it down with a flathead. Two months of daily use and it has zero play now. Looks ugly as sin but works perfect. Anyone else repurposed plumbing hardware for coffee gear, or am I the only one drinking espresso that smells faintly of laundry room?

Ha! My buddy in Boise did something similar with his old espresso machine. He had a leaky pressure valve and rigged it with a copper compression fitting from his sprinkler system.
Worked fine for about six months until the whole thing seized up and he had to cut the line. He said it smelled like rusty water and burnt coffee for a week after.
I told him he was lucky it didn't spray hot water everywhere. He's since bought a proper tamper, but he still keeps a pipe wrench next to his grinder just in case.
