I swore I'd never touch my own brakes until a guy named Ray at an AutoZone in Reno proved me wrong
For about 6 years I paid a shop $400 every time my pads got low because I figured brakes were the one thing a regular person should leave alone. Then a couple months back I was buying wiper blades at the AutoZone on South Virginia in Reno and this older guy Ray behind the counter heard me complain about the quote. He said, "Man, it's two bolts and a C-clamp, you're not rebuilding a transmission." I laughed it off, but he walked me out to my car in the parking lot, pulled up a video on his phone, and showed me the whole job in about 4 minutes. Two weeks later I did my front pads and rotors in my own driveway with a $32 socket set and a loaner clamp from the same store, and it took me just under 2 hours. The part that got me was how dumb simple it was once I saw somebody do it, and I kept thinking about all that money I handed over for a job a guy taught me in a parking lot. Next up is the rear drums and I'm a little nervous about those, so if anybody has done drum brakes on an older Civic I'd love to hear how it went.
