Vent: Found loose bricks on my patio after a contractor 'fixed' it last month
I paid a guy $600 to repoint my patio steps and walkway in Portland. Now I'm seeing bricks wobbling and gaps opening up after only 4 weeks. Did he just use sand mix instead of actual mortar, or am I being too picky? Anyone else had a DIY repair fail that fast?

$600 is actually on the low end for repointing in Portland, so you probably got what you paid for and the guy might have used a premix that's fine for warmer climates but fails fast here. Are you sure the base layer wasn't already compromised before he worked on it?

I used a product called type N mortar from Home Depot and mixed it myself, and it's still solid after 2 years in the rain... sounds like he cut corners with that sand mix.
