Stripped pedal threads on an old crank, my 3 hour fix turned into 9 days

I was swapping pedals on my 90s mountain bike and the left one cross threaded, eating up the crank arm threads completely. I tried a thread chaser, then a helicoil kit from the auto parts store, but the crank was too soft and it kept tearing out. Has anyone had luck with epoxy and a new pedal, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a fresh crankset?

I feel your pain on the "3 hour fix turned into 9 days" thing. That's not a fix, that's a full time job with worse pay. I once spent a week trying to save a stripped bottom bracket shell with JB Weld and a prayer, and it held for exactly one ride before I heard a noise like a bag of forks falling downstairs. Honestly, if the crank is that soft, you're just gonna keep chasing your tail with thread kits. New crankset sucks to buy, but your bike will actually move when you pedal instead of making that sad clicking sound.
