My $34 chain tool bent two pins before a ride, cheap one from the co-op did the job
I grabbed a $34 chain breaker off a big site two weeks ago because my old one walked off, and it snapped the first two pins I tried to push on a 9 speed chain in my garage. The guy at the co-op in Canton handed me a beat up $12 tool from the parts bin, showed me to back the pin out a quarter turn after it seats, and it popped the link clean in one go. So who's right here, do you eat the cost and buy the nicer breaker and just learn to feel when the pin bottoms out, or is the cheap tool fine and I was cranking it like an animal?
Man that sucks, dropping 34 bucks just to snap pins right out of the gate. Been there with a cheap breaker too, and yeah I was cranking way too hard because nobody told me the pin bottoms out and you gotta back it off a hair. That quarter turn trick is the whole game, once you feel it seat you stop or the pin just folds. The co-op guy knew what he was doing. I'd say run the beater tool and save your money, a chain breaker isn't rocket science as long as you go easy on it.
