The 20 second color picker trick I kept ignoring for 6 months

I always saw folks on here raving about using the eyedropper tool on reference photos instead of guessing skin tones, but I figured my eye was good enough. Then last week I matched a portrait against my tablet and the skin looked green, no joke. I finally tried sampling directly from the photo highlights and shadows, and the difference was night and day. Has anyone else had a stubborn habit that cost them way more editing time than it should have?
