DAE keep seeing guys torque head bolts dry on old 12 valves?
Pulled the head off a customer's 1990 Cummins in my shop off Route 9 in Poughkeepsie last Tuesday and every single bolt came out dry as a bone, no lube anywhere. The manual says a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the washer, and skipping it throws your torque reading off by as much as 20 percent because of the friction. I've seen three trucks this season with stretched bolts and one with a cracked block, and all of them had dry threads. If you're doing a head job, take the two minutes and oil them, or tell me why I'm wrong about this.
