My first week running the shuttle route in Boulder was a mess, but I can't decide if the riders or the schedule were the real problem
Two Mondays back I took over the 7:15am neighborhood shuttle in Boulder and by Wednesday I had 14 people waiting in the rain at a stop I had already passed, all because the old driver used to fudge the route to make up time. Riders loved him for it, but the printed map says one thing and his shortcut said another, so now I either follow the book and get yelled at or copy his trick and get flagged by dispatch. I get why folks want the quickest ride, but the agency is watching the GPS pings and I'm the one who catches heat. Do you bend the route to keep people happy, or stick to the posted stops even when it makes you the bad guy?
Man, I saw a thread on r/BusDriving about this exact thing, and the old heads there said fudging the route always comes back to bite you once GPS gets involved. Sounds like the real problem is the schedule itself being too tight, not you or the riders. Sucks that you're stuck in the middle of it either way.
