Is smoothing serum really worth it or are we just scamming clients?

I've been doing hair for 6 years now and every time I recommend a smoothing serum to a client with frizz, half of them come back saying it did nothing. But I also see some stylists swear by it and charge an extra $15 per service. Last week I did two blowouts on the same hair type, one with serum and one without, and honestly the difference was barely noticeable after 20 minutes. Are we just pushing product for commission or is there a technique most of us are missing? Curious if anyone else has tested this or if I'm going against the grain here.

Grab a smaller amount than you think you need and apply it to damp hair before you blow dry, not after. Most people glob it on wet hair like conditioner and then wonder why it doesn't do anything. The trick is that it locks in the moisture from the water, so if you put it on dry hair or towel dried hair that's already lost most of its moisture, you're basically just coating the strands with oil. That 20 minute test you did probably would've shown a bigger gap if you had hit both sections with the same heat and brush technique. It's not a miracle product, but it does work better when you treat it like a prep step, not a finish spray.
