Bought a $400 color correction kit that ended up in the trash

I finally caved and ordered one of those fancy online color correction courses with the full kit, $400 gone. The pigments were way too thin for my client's coarse hair and the tutorials were filmed in lighting that just does not exist in real salons. I spent two evenings following every step and the results looked like a patchy mess, barely any different from a box dye. I tore it all up and went back to my regular brand that costs a fraction of the price. Has anyone else gotten burned by these gimmicky correction kits, or is it just me?
