Appreciation post: a 20 volume developer on gray hair finally made sense after a nail tech explained it to me
I had a client three weeks ago with about 40% gray and I kept getting a hot root even though I used 10 volume like I always do. My nail tech friend was watching me mix and said the gray hair cuticle is tougher, so the color grabs faster at the scalp where your body heat sits. She suggested dropping to 20 volume and applying mids to ends first, then going back to the root at the very end. I tried it on her mom last Tuesday and the root matched the mid strand almost perfectly, no banding at all. I have been doing this for 9 years and never had anyone explain it in plain words like that. Has anyone else switched their gray coverage routine after a tip from someone outside the hair world?
