A retired stylist at my booth in Savannah told me foils are 'just a way to stall' and now I'm questioning my whole highlight setup
She said she stopped foiling entirely after 22 years and switched to freehand balayage because foils were making her slow and the grow-out looked harder, and now I'm wondering if any of you actually dropped foils for good or if that's just a retiree flex.
My barber of 30 years said the same thing about straight razors before he retired, and I've heard it from guys in every trade I've worked around. When you've done something long enough, the tool stops being the point and you start seeing everything that slows you down, so the retiree flex is real but it's also just what happens when you hit year 22. Foils aren't a stall, they're a choice, and the grow-out argument only matters if your clients actually care about that.
