The HVAC guy swore the filter was fine, he was wrong by week 3
My landlord sent his usual AC guy out in June and he told me the filter was fine, just leave it. I believed him because he's been doing this for 15 years. By mid-July my electric bill jumped to $287, which is about $90 more than normal for our 2 bedroom in Phoenix. I pulled the filter myself and it was completely clogged with dust and pet hair. The guy admitted he only checked the pressure and not the actual filter. Has anyone else had a service pro skip the obvious check and cost you real money?

Did he get to keep his equipment in Phoenix after owning up to that, or did your landlord have to lean on the company to make it right? Because in my experience, once a tech admits he skipped the obvious step, the next move is usually him trying to defend the bill instead of owning the mistake. I had a similar thing with a window AC unit once, the guy swore the coils were clean and I found a dust bunny the size of a hamster in there a week later. Your mileage may vary, but I'd be checking that filter myself every month from now on, and I'd probably ask the landlord to write it into the lease that the tech has to physically pull it during each visit.
