Can we talk about how everyone resets Windows before backing up client data?
I've been doing bench work in Cleveland for 11 years and I keep hearing techs say a clean Windows install is step one. Last month a client brought in a laptop with 4 years of tax files on it, and the guy before me wiped it without pulling the drive first. That's $600 worth of recovery work at my shop because he trusted a clean install over a 20 minute file copy. A reset does not save you time when the customer calls back about missing photos from 2019. I've started cloning every drive to a $40 dock before I touch the OS, and it has saved me three times this year alone. Anyone else get burned by skipping the backup step, or am I the only one who learned it the hard way?
