TIL my backyard compost bin was too dry after 2 months of nothing

I started composting 3 months ago and threw in kitchen scraps every week but nothing was breaking down. Last week I added a bucket of water and stirred it up, and now it's actually heating up and shrinking. Anyone else deal with a dry compost pile and how often do you water yours?

Not gonna lie I used to think you just tossed stuff in and nature did its thing. Adding water was a total game changer for my pile too.

Right? I was the same way. Now I just give it a good soak every few layers and it actually starts cooking. You ever try watering it with a hose set to a gentle spray? Keeps the pile from getting too soggy in one spot.
