Rant: how a simple neighborhood watch sign turned into a feud

I put up a 'slow down kids at play' sign on my street last Tuesday after almost hitting a kid on a bike. Next morning my neighbor across the way had ripped it down and left a note saying I was making the block look trashy. I taped it back up with a polite reply stuck to his door about safety versus looks. Now three other houses have put up their own signs and he's not speaking to any of us. Has anyone dealt with a neighbor who pushes back on basic community stuff like this?

Honestly, I'm kind of on your neighbor's side here. If you're worried about kids, maybe talk to them directly instead of turning the street into a billboard for every minor scare. Did you really tape a note to his door over a sign? That might have made this way bigger than it needed to be.
