TIL the first comic book convention had only 100 people show up...

I was digging through some old articles online and found out that the very first Comic-Con in San Diego back in 1970 only drew about 100 fans. It was held in a tiny hotel basement. These days you see thousands packed into convention centers, so it blew my mind how small it started. Has anyone else run into weird early fan event facts?

A buddy of mine went to a tiny horror film festival back in the early 90s in some random church basement. He said there were maybe 40 people there, and the guest of honor was some B-movie actor from the 70s who spent the whole time selling his own VHS tapes out of a cardboard box. No badges, no vendor hall, just a guy in a folding chair with a sharpie and a stack of movies.

I mean, I get what your friend is saying, but that honestly sounds kinda rad to me. Like, a guy selling his own tapes out of a box in a church basement? That’s pure, no-bullshit DIY horror stuff. Maybe it's just me but I’d take that over a big convention with lines and $40 parking any day.
