Roughing pass depths, a 10 minute rant

Old timer at the shop told me to drop my roughing depth from .08 to .05 and I laughed at him. After three broken inserts on a 4140 job last week I tried it, tool life nearly doubled and vibration went away. Anyone else stubborn about changing feeds until something breaks?
