Remember when we had to hand-scrape every part for flatness?

Had a big aluminum plate job, needed to be flat within 0.001. Old guy in the shop said to try a trick from the manual mill days. I put a thin film of layout dye on the surface plate, then gently rubbed the part on it. The high spots showed up bright blue. Took a stone and just kissed those spots, checked again. Did that three times and it was dead flat. Anyone still use that old spotting method for tricky finishes?

Is that really necessary for just one plate?

Honestly, what else would you do with it?
