Just read that a worn out spindle bearing can cost you over 5 grand to fix

I was looking up some old Haas service bulletins online last night, trying to figure out a weird noise on our VF2. Buried in one of them, they flat out said a full spindle rebuild from a worn bearing, if you let it go too far, can run between $5,000 and $7,000. That's not even counting the machine being down for a week or more. I've heard the noise for a couple months now and just kept running parts, thinking it was just a fan or something. Now I'm staring at this machine like it's a ticking time bomb. The bulletin said the main cause is just running it with low grease or ignoring the early sounds. Makes you wonder how many shops are one bad week away from a bill that huge. Has anyone actually had to bite the bullet on a full spindle repair, and how bad was the hit?

Five to seven grand just for the bearing? That's insane.

Right? "Five to seven grand" sounds like a quote for a small car, not a single part. I'd expect that price to include a mechanic who also does your taxes and gives life advice. For just the bearing, they must be shipping it in a solid gold box with a velvet pillow.
