Finally figured out why my offsets kept drifting on the Haas
Took me 6 months of random tool height errors to realize the wiper on the probe was shot. It was leaving a tiny film of coolant on the stylus, so every touch off was reading about .002 low. I only caught it when I ran a test part with a brand new probe from the drawer and the numbers matched the drawing exactly. Swapped the wiper for a $12 one from McMaster and zero issues since. Anyone else ever chase a phantom offset problem that turned out to be a cheap wear part?

Had this exact thing happen on a VF2 about three years back. Coolant mist would build up on the stylus and the probe would read heavy on every touch, and it got worse as the day went on because the film kept getting thicker. What finally tipped me off was checking the same tool twice in a row, first thing in the morning versus after lunch, and seeing the number walk by a couple thou. Now I wipe the stylus with a clean rag at the start of every shift and keep spare wipers in the toolbox, that $12 part has saved me way more than it costs in scrap.
