Took me 4 months and a trip to my mom's garage in Tucson to find the mug that went with my grandfather's saucer
Back in January I pulled this old saucer out of a box in my mom's garage in Tucson, plain white with a thin gold line around the rim and a tiny chip on the underside that I never noticed until I held it up to the light. It clearly had a mug that went with it, so I figured I'd just grab a matching one off a thrift run in a week or two, no big deal. Four months later I had checked nine thrift stores, two estate sales, and every online listing I could find, and nothing matched the gold line or the exact curve of the foot. The problem was that the saucer had no maker's mark, so I was basically matching by eyeball, and half the mugs I brought home sat a millimeter too wide or the gold was the wrong shade. My mom finally dug through one more box in the back of the garage and there it was, wrapped in a 1994 newspaper, with a hairline crack down the side and a stain ring inside from decades of coffee. It doesn't even sit flat in the saucer and the crack means I can't really drink from it, but it's my grandfather's, so it stays on the shelf next to the saucer anyway. Now I'm wondering, has anyone else hunted down a matching piece for months only to find the pair in the same house the whole time?
