PSA: That gray ring inside your mug is not a stain, it's tiny scratches and it never comes off
I was reading a ceramics blog out of Asheville last week and the potter who wrote it said something that stuck with me. The gray ring you get inside a mug after a few hundred cups of coffee is not leftover coffee at all. It is thousands of tiny scratches in the glaze, and coffee oils settle down into them. That is why baking soda never touches it and why it keeps coming back a day after you scrub. It took about 200 washes before my own mug started showing it, which lines up with what she wrote. I have been drinking out of the same tan mug for 6 years now and I always thought I was just bad at cleaning it. Nope. The glaze is worn down right where my lip hits and where the spoon stirs. Turns out that is normal and not gross. Anyone else notice their ring is darker on one side, or is it just mine?
