Can we talk about the guy at the flea market who told me to stop scrubbing my mug's crack with steel wool?
So about a month ago I was at the Kane County flea market poking through a bin of old diner cups, and this older guy running the booth noticed me eyeing the crack in the bottom of one. I said I'd pass because I couldn't get the coffee stain out of the hairline. He picked it up, turned it over and said "you're scrubbing the dirt in deeper, son, just soak it." He explained that hot water and a scoop of OxiClean for a couple hours lifts the stain out of the crack without grinding the glaze off the edges. I tried it on my 15-year-old camp mug when I got home, the one with the chip on the rim I refuse to toss. Two hours later the brown ring inside the crack was gone and the chip didn't get any worse. My only worry is whether the soak dries out the glaze over time, so I've been doing it maybe once a month. Anyone else tried this or got a gentler method that won't dull the shine?
