Overheard a customer say their new 'smart' fireplace logs don't need a sweep

I was at the hardware store last week and a guy was telling the clerk he bought those fake electric fireplace logs. He said since they don't burn wood, he doesn't need a chimney sweep anymore. That got me thinking. Even if you don't burn wood, a flue still needs an inspection for animals, water damage, or blockages. I've seen two jobs this month where gas fireplaces had bird nests clogging the vent. Has anyone else run into this idea that new tech means zero maintenance?

My neighbor's gas insert had a squirrel nest last fall.

That "squirrel nest" thing shows how animals keep moving into our spaces...
