Unpopular opinion: soap on cast iron is fine if you dry it right
Everyone in here acts like soap will ruin a pan. My aunt in Dayton told me to stop babying mine, just use Dawn and dry it on the stove. I did that for a month now, no rust, no sticky spots. Does anyone else wash with soap or am I the only one not scared of a little detergent?
My grandmother cooked on the same cast iron skillet for 40 years and never once touched soap to it, so I'm with the old school folks on this one. The seasoning is a layer of polymerized oil, and Dawn is literally designed to break down oils, so why risk it when hot water and a chainmail scrubber does the job fine? You might get away with it for a month, but wait until a year goes by and see if that pan still feels as slick as it did on day one.
