Debate: soap on seasoned cast iron - my sister-in-law told me I was ruining my pan
She said using any soap strips the seasoning and I should just scrub with salt and water, but I've been using a tiny bit of dawn for years with no issues. Who's right here - does a drop of soap actually mess up the seasoning or is that old-school thinking?

Oh man, I've been using a tiny bit of soap on my cast iron for years and it's perfectly fine! The seasoning stays put as long as you aren't scrubbing like a maniac.

Wait, didn't I just read somewhere that soap on cast iron used to be a big no-no because old school lye soaps would strip the seasoning? But yeah, modern soaps are MILD and totally fine for a quick wash. I've been using a drop of dish soap and a soft sponge on mine for a few months now, no issues at all. The whole "never use soap" thing is basically a myth from when soap was way MORE harsh.
