Shoutout to the old timer who swore by a chalk line for layout

I always thought using a chalk line for big floor layouts was just extra work, like why not just snap a laser line and go? Last month on a 40 foot deck job, my laser died right after lunch. The guy I was working with, Frank, pulled out his chalk box and had the whole thing snapped in maybe 10 minutes. No batteries, no fuss, and the line was perfect and visible from anywhere. I felt pretty dumb for doubting it for so long. Has anyone else had a simple tool surprise them like that?

I mean, chalk lines are one thing, but the real shocker for me was a manual hand drill. My cordless died on a cabinet install and my buddy's old eggbeater drill got the last few holes done faster than I could find a charger. Felt like a total goof for relying on batteries for everything. Sometimes the old way just works when you need it to.

Remember my granddad's toolbox had a brace and bit set he swore by for fine work. There's a certain quiet control you get with hand tools that power tools just can't match. We've traded that skill for speed, but speed means nothing when you're staring at a dead battery. Keeping a simple hand drill around isn't being old fashioned, it's just being smart.
