Got chewed out by an old framer for my nail gun technique

I was on a job in Des Moines last month and this 60 year old guy watched me sink a row of 16d nails into a header. He said I was wasting air by not burying the nail head flush with the wood every time, leaving a gap. Now I'm wondering if I've been doing it wrong for 2 years or if he was just being picky.
