Planned a whole Sunday at the lake, got rained out, ended up at a tiny diner in Rhinebeck with the best pie of my life
My friends and I had been planning a lake day for three weeks, packed the cooler, bought a $40 float, the whole thing. Then it poured starting at 7am and we sat in my car for 20 minutes trying to figure out what to do. Someone said let's just drive north and we ended up at this little diner in Rhinebeck that only had 6 tables, and the waitress talked us into the sour cherry pie. I'm not even a pie person but I ate two slices and we stayed for 3 hours just talking. Has anyone else had a rained out plan turn into something way better than what you originally wanted to do?
My big plan for a sunny Saturday last summer was a whole hike and picnic, and I spent 45 minutes packing trail mix and filling water bottles for a trail that turned out to be closed for repairs. We ended up at a bowling alley in a strip mall instead, and I bowled a 61, which is impressively bad if you know anything about bowling scores. My friends still bring up that day more than the good hikes we've done. The sad truth is my best memories keep coming from plans that fell apart. I once cried over burnt cookies and then had the best night of my year at a gas station taco stand, so maybe I should just stop planning things.
