Why does everyone on here say the $280 REI Half Dome is the best starter tent when it leaks after 2 seasons
I have to push back on this one because it keeps coming up in review threads and I think people are giving bad advice to new campers. I bought the Half Dome 2 about 3 seasons ago based on all the rave reviews here, and by the second season the rainfly was already letting water through the seams during a storm at Great Smoky Mountains in October. I spent 2 nights basically wet in 50 degree weather and had to drive into Gatlinburg at 7am to buy a cheap tarp just to make it through the trip. Two other folks in my camping group have the same tent and both had seam issues within 18 months, so this is not just me being unlucky. The thing is, for $280 you can get a much better tent from smaller brands that most people have not heard of, or you can save $80 and get something that works just as well. The reviews here seem to be written by people who took the tent out twice and called it a winner, which is not a real review in my book. Does anyone else feel like the hype on this sub is driven by which brand has the best marketing rather than actual long term use?
