TIL an old timer told me to keep my sleeping bag inside a compression sack during the day

I always thought storing it loose in my pack would keep the loft better, but after 3 days in the Smokies last fall my bag was basically useless at night. He said to keep it compressed until bedtime and let it fluff up for an hour before sleeping. Has anyone else had a similar debate about bag storage?

Have you tried letting it fluff for more than just an hour? In my experience with a similar down bag, it really needs a good 90 minutes to fully expand, especially if you're in damp conditions. Your mileage may vary, but I found that storing it compressed and then giving it that extra time made a huge difference in warmth compared to keeping it loose in my pack all day. Take that with a grain of salt though, synthetic bags might behave differently.

Compression is fine for down too, I just worry more about moisture getting trapped if you stuff it wet and then compress it all day without air moving through.
