Split on the trail: ditch the heavy tent or tough it out?

Last month in the Smokies, my tent pole snapped at 2 AM during a thunderstorm, and I had to decide between wrapping myself in the rain fly or hiking 4 miles back to the car in the dark. I chose the fly and got soaked, but it made me wonder if ultralight shelters are actually worth the risk. Has anyone else had a gear failure force a quick call like that, and did you stick with your setup or switch?
