Rant: I thought the 'tone and probe' thing was installer voodoo until a job in Mesa proved me wrong
For a long time I rolled my eyes at the older guys who insist on toning every line and probing every outlet before they touch a single connector. Then a job in Mesa last spring had a barrel in the wall that read perfect on my meter but wouldn't lock a signal, and I burned two hours swapping fittings that were fine. A guy named Ray from our Phoenix office pulled out his toner, found the splitter feeding the wrong unit, and we were done in 20 minutes. Now I probe first, and I hate that I wasted so long doing it the fast way. How many of you actually tone every drop on a rough-in, or do you skip it on simple jobs?
