Worst Saturday I've had in years with a whole pig breakdown

Last Saturday I had a 200 pound pig come in and the hide was so tough my boning knife felt like butter knife after 20 minutes. I ended up dulling three blades just getting through the belly, and the whole process took me almost 5 hours instead of the usual 3. Has anyone else run into a hog that was just unusually tough to break down, or was it maybe my technique?

hold up, i gotta push back a little here. i've broken down probably 50 hogs this year alone and i've never had a hide that killed three knives in one session. are you sure you weren't just using cheap knives or not sharpening them right before you started? i use a $40 victorinox and a steel rod between cuts, and even on tough old boars i'm done in 3.5 hours max. sounds like you might need to up your sharpening game or learn to work with the grain better instead of fighting the hide straight on.

Makes me think of people who blame their tools for everything instead of their technique.
