Hot take: I picked the old hand saw over the bandsaw for breaking down my last 3 deer, and my yield went up 4 lbs
Honestly I thought this was a dumb idea when my buddy Dale in Missoula first said it. Three deer ago I was using my bandsaw for everything and getting decent cuts, no real complaints. But he kept telling me that for breaking down a whole carcass, a good hand saw gives you more control around the joints and wastes less meat. So two weekends back I did a side by side on a whitetail doe I took near the Bitterroot. Bandsaw on one hind quarter, hand saw on the other. Ngl the hand saw took me about 12 extra minutes but I pulled almost a full pound more clean meat off that quarter because I wasn't smearing fat or losing trim to the blade. Across the whole deer that added up to right around 4 lbs I would have ground into sausage anyway. My 14 inch Victorinox with the bone blade is now my go to for anything with a joint, and the bandsaw only comes out for straight steaks now. Has anyone else gone back to hand tools after years on a bandsaw, or am I just late to something every old timer already knew?
