Shoutout to the bookkeeper in Des Moines who asked why I was billing my mileage as a service
I ran my little handyman LLC for almost two years before someone caught this. Back in March I sat down with a bookkeeper in Des Moines to get my taxes squared up, and she flipped through my invoices and stopped on one. She asked why I had a line item called "travel" at $0.67 a mile billed to customers like it was a separate service I offered. I told her that's how I'd always done it since I started, and she just looked at me and said that's not a service, that's a cost you fold into the job price. Turns out I'd been handing customers a reason to argue about my rates for 18 months, and I never once thought to question it. She showed me three invoices from last fall where the mileage line started a whole back and forth about whether the trip was needed. Now I just bake it into the flat rate and nobody says a word. Any of you ever had a bookkeeper or accountant catch something in your billing that you'd been doing wrong for years?
