TIL that writing down every 15 min interruption for a week cut my wasted hours in half
I run a 6 person shop and kept feeling like my days vanished, so two weeks ago I started keeping a tally sheet of every time someone pulled me off a task. After 5 days I had 41 interruptions logged, and 28 of them were the same 3 questions about job schedules and material pickups. So I made one shared sheet where the crew writes their own answers and only flags me if it's a real problem, and last week I got 12 hours back. The fix cost me nothing but 20 minutes of setup in Google Sheets. Has anyone else tried tracking interruptions before changing how the shop runs, and did the numbers surprise you as much as mine did?
Man, tracking stuff like that always shocks you once you actually see the numbers on paper. I did something kinda similar with my grocery runs a while back, just writing down every impulse buy, and turns out half my cart was stuff I didn't even want, just grabbed out of habit. Numbers don't lie I guess.
