Contractor said we needed a second forklift, we didn't
My warehouse manager in Tulsa insisted we buy a second forklift for $28k because he swore our order picking was bottlenecking. I pushed back and instead had him track pick times for two weeks, turns out the real issue was the layout of the packing station, not lift capacity. Have you ever had an expert push expensive gear when a process tweak would've solved it?
Happened to me a few years back with a packing line. The supervisor was dead set on a new conveyor system, quoted us like 40k. Instead of arguing, I told him to run a full week with him personally watching the bottlenecks. Turned out the problem was simple, the tape dispenser was on the wrong side of the table. Every worker had to reach across a pallet to grab it. Moved it two feet and our output jumped by almost a third. That supervisor still brings it up as a lesson learned for his own team. People love to throw money at a problem when sometimes you just gotta watch the work happen for a day. Good on you for holding the line and making them prove it with data. That's the only way to shut down the gear hawkers.
