Took a hostel dorm over a private room in Lisbon and saved a ton
I was planning a week in Lisbon and had to choose between a 30 euro a night hostel dorm or a 90 euro private room. Figured I'd try the dorm since I'm young and can deal with noise. Ended up meeting a guy from Australia who showed me how to use the local tram pass for 6 euros a day instead of tourist buses. The dorm had lockers and I brought earplugs so sleep was fine. Saved about 420 euros total for the week just on lodging and transit. Plus I got tips on cheap pasteis de nata spots that locals actually go to. Anyone else had luck ditching private rooms for dorms overseas?

I stayed in a 10 bed dorm in Budapest last summer for 12 euro a night and met a retired chef who showed me where to get the best goulash for like 3 euro. He also taught me how to use the local market to buy fresh fruit and cheese for breakfast instead of paying hostel prices for toast. That one guy saved me probably 50 euro on food alone just by chatting at the bunk next to me.
