Skipping the lowest priced hostel for a family homestay actually cut my costs.
The family I stayed with cooked meals and showed me free spots, so I spent less overall. Why do travel guides rarely mention this?

Totally get that. Had the same thing happen with a farmstay last year. They fed me breakfast and dinner every day, so my food budget basically vanished. Travel guides probably just stick to hotels and hostels because that's the easy list to make. Or maybe those places pay to get in the book. Either way, you found the real hack for saving cash and seeing how people actually live.

Exactly! I did a work exchange on a ranch once and @max_jackson56 is right about the food budget disappearing. Getting meals included changes the whole cost of a trip. You end up with more cash for everything else.

Wait they fed you breakfast AND dinner? That's wild, my farmstay only did breakfast. You basically got two free meals a day, that's a huge deal. I'd have saved so much more cash. Makes me wonder what other places are out there giving full board.
