Pro tip: the $3 day pass at the Chicago Cultural Center saved me $40 on a rainy layover
Two years back I had a 9 hour layover in Chicago and almost dropped $50 on a museum ticket just to kill time. A guy at my hostel front desk told me the Chicago Cultural Center on Michigan Ave is free every day, and it turns out their Tiffany glass dome is the biggest one of its kind anywhere. That is not the real hack though. The real one is that a lot of big city libraries and cultural centers sell a cheap day pass or guest pass that gets you into partner museums at a discount, and almost nobody at the ticket counter brings it up. I paid $3 for a guest pass at that same spot and got into two museums for $6 total instead of $25 each. The trick is you usually have to ask at the info desk, not buy online, because the pass only works same day in person. If you are stuck somewhere for a long layover, look up the city library system first before you look at the big attractions. Has anyone else found a city pass like this that actually worked when you asked in person?
